Easy Way to Clean Your Headlights
With vehicles lasting an average of 11 years, your car headlights are exposed to the ultraviolet rays long enough to cause oxidation. Oxidation causes headlights to become very cloudy and dull which can reduce visibility and lead to accidents.
An easy way to maximize your headlights’ lifetime is to use window cleaner or toothpaste. Standard window cleaner will get rid of the mild oxidation, while toothpaste is capable of cleaning away thicker oxidation on headlamps which can dull your headlights. However, if neither method works, you’ll have to clean them like a professional would.
How to Professionally Clean your Headlights
To clean your headlights professionally, you will need a few supplies. Fortunately, these supplies are rather inexpensive and easy to obtain. The supplies needed are as follows:
- Electrical Tape
- Cold water
- Window cleaner
- Coarse and fine sandpaper
- Microfiber cloth
- Polishing compound
Now you’re ready to clean your headlights! Depending on the amount of oxidation, it could take up to an hour to clean your headlights. By the end of these instructions, your headlights should look just like new. If they don’t, then you might have to replace the headlights.
Electrical Tape: To protect the chrome, trim, and paint on your vehicle, frame the headlights with electrical tape.
Window Cleaner: Spray the headlights with the window cleaner and wipe off with the microfiber cloth.
Sand Paper: Soak the sandpaper in cold water, then sand in a single direction - starting with the coarser paper. Repeat the process with the finer grains of paper, until you remove the very top layer of the plastic lens. Gradually advance to the finer sandpaper, until the lenses are smooth and clean.
Polish: Now, you can polish the headlights, which will remove the rest of the discoloration.
A few inexpensive items and some elbow grease will quickly restore your headlights to their old, bright selves in no time.
