In 1954, Mercedes-Benz hit a home run with the release of the 300SL series. Called the “Gullwing”, the 300SL became an instant classic thanks to its superb engineering. The initial 300SL model was a two-seat sports vehicle with a fuel injection engine, four-speed manual transmission, a single overhead camshaft and the famed “gullwing” doors, hence the nickname of the vehicle. The success of the 300SL served Mercedes-Benz well during the rest of the 1950s. The next breakthrough for the company occurred in 1963 with the release of the 600 luxury series. This full size limousine that featured a power-glass partition between the front and rear seats was another instant hit for the affluent who saw this limo as the ultimate in luxury. It was highly popular in Hollywood where its presence served big time movie producers and stars quite well. The success would continue in the same year with the release of the W113 Pagoda S Class. With customers around the world hungry for larger, more powerful automobiles, Mercedes-Benz enjoyed a golden era that lasted for the next 10 years.
The oil crisis of 1973 put a major bind on Mercedes-Benz as their line of vehicles were ill-suited for the new emphasis on gas economy.?? By the turn of the 1990s, Mercedes-Benz had brought in the C Class that emphasized new refinements and set the tone for the rest of the decade. The CLK Class, SLK Class and M Class that focused on the emerging popularity of SUVs helped keep Mercedes-Benz near the top in terms of innovation. The popularity of SUVs also led to the creation of the GL and GLK Class of SUVs as well.
