Founded in 1922, Jaguar has enjoyed a rich history in the automotive industry. Originally producing motorcycle sidecars, Jaguar expanded its services and manufacturing capabilities to become one of England’s most prestigious luxury auto companies.
In 1922, the Swallow Sidecar Company was formed by Sir William Lyons and William Walmsley, two motorcycle enthusiasts who wanted to create their own motorcycles and sidecars. World War 2 brought about new changes for the company, the most significant being the name change to Jaguar in order to avoid any associated with the Nazis. The post-war economic growth helped Jaguar’s sales, especially that of the XK 120, a very popular sports car that was fitted with an inline six cylinder engines and came in coupe, sedan or drop-head coupe versions. The XJ helped lead Jaguar through the 1960s and into the 1970s as well thanks to successful models such as the XJ-S, XJ6C and XJ12. The famed “E-Type” was taken over by the XJ series in 1975 and equipped with a 5.3L V12 engine.
By the 1980s, Jaguar had created the XJ-S HE sporting a high efficiency engine capable of 295 hp. A convertible model, the XJ-SC came into being in 1983. By the end of the 80’s, Jaguar was becoming even more competitive with other European manufacturers and was eventually sold to the Ford Motor Company in 1990.
Through the 1990s, Jaguar released a number of outstanding vehicles including the XK8, which sported a V8 engine in 1996. The XJR was another significant vehicle from Jaguar as well as the supercharged AJ16. The S-Type vehicle made its debut in 1998 sporting a supercharged engine as well.
