The Chrysler Group LLC is one of the most celebrated of American automakers. Enjoying a rich, long history of producing excellent vehicles, Chrysler has certainly earned a reputation for high standards, high quality and consumer-friendly automobiles. In addition to producing fine automobiles, Chrysler has earned a reputation for innovation as well. The use of advanced materials and technology, such as upgraded engines, lighter weight materials, and LED lights to name a few have helped Chrysler stay at the forefront of automotive innovation.?? Walter Chrysler founded the company named after him on June 6th, 1925. Chrysler was actually re-organized from the Maxwell Motor Company which had been building vehicles for the previous twenty years. Immediately, Walter Chrysler set out to establish his company as a leader in innovation and affordability to compete with the larger Ford and Chevrolet automakers.
His first effort was a six cylinder auto that was well engineered and more affordable than the competition. Early on, Chrysler included many features such as the carburetor air filter, oil filter and high compression engine which are standard today, but rarely seen in autos of that time period. Another example of innovation was the unique tire created to stay on the rim even after deflating, something that is now standard in the tire industry. Chrysler’s combination of innovation, style and affordability quickly caught on with the public as they began producing more vehicles during the 1920s and 1930s. In addition, Chrysler added the Dodge Brothers auto and truck makers to their line, along with the Dodge and DeSoto divisions as well. With their corporation expanding through World War Two and into the 1950s, Chrysler expanded their line of luxury autos known as the Imperial to their own separate line. However, one of the most important innovations occurred in 1955 with the introduction of the all-transistor radio to Chrysler autos. This helped to revolutionize the industry as today car radios come standard with virtually all vehicles.
Innovation continued to be at the forefront of Chrysler when they introduced the electronic fuel-injection vehicle as an option for many of their vehicles in 1957. While the Imperial was the flagship of the Chrysler line, the Valiant was introduced in the 1960s as a more affordable, consumer friendly vehicle. For the next few decades, Chrysler continued its efforts at creating autos and trucks to meet consumer demands. As with all American auto manufacturers, Chrysler had to adjust for the Oil Crisis of 1973 and produce more fuel efficient, consumer friendly vehicles to compete with the Japanese imports. However, by the 1980s Chrysler had expanded to incorporate the Jeep brand into its line along with American Motors (AMC). This success was bolstered by the expansion of Dodge brand trucks, particular the Ram which began selling in far greater numbers than ever before. The end of the 20th century saw Chrysler engage in a partnership with Daimler-Benz to create Daimler-Chrysler AG. Eventually, Daimler took over Chrysler and then by the next decade Fiat had purchased Chrysler to incorporate them into their company.
There is little doubt that Chrysler vehicles are still highly popular and new innovations have kept consumers around the world interested in what is next. While the famed luxury brands of Chrysler over the years, such as the Imperial, LeBaron and New Yorker for example, have kept the company stable. New, more contemporary models such as the Crossfire keep Chrysler right on the forefront of innovation. The sleek Crossfire and stylish Pacifica, a well-received crossover SUV have generated positive buzz for their performance and overall appearance. Plus, the popular Sebring models remains one of the most valuable members of the Chrysler family. However, if there is one vehicle that has helped Chrysler stay ahead of the completion, aside from the vaunted 300 Series, it is the retro-PT Cruiser. A five-door wagon with a retro, 1930s type design, the PT Cruiser was another gamble that paid off big for this automaker. There is little doubt that Chrysler has led the auto industry for many decades in terms of embracing new technology and innovation. From using lighter weight materials, new engine designs and LED lights, Chrysler continues to lead the way for other auto manufacturers.
