One of the most celebrated names in British automotives, Bentley has become synonymous with luxury, style and performance. Founded in 1919, Bentley Motors Limited is a direct successor of Rolls-Royce Motors, which purchased Bentley in 1931. Today, Bentley automobiles are sold around the world with China currently being the largest individual market.
Few names evoke luxury automobiles more than Bentley. Since the company was first founded in 1919, Bentley has stood for upscale, high quality automotives with a unique combination of artistry, luxury and sport car performance. Walter Owen Bentley founded the company on the ideal of creating unique automobiles and his first model was released in 1921, the 3 Litre. This particular vehicle would go on to with the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. However, the stock market crash of 1929 put Bentley in dire straits and the company was sold two years later to Rolls-Royce. In 1933, the 3 Litre was released and the company continued to improve on its vehicles until World War 2. After the war, Bentley Motors was moved to Crewe, Cheshire where future models would carry more attributes of Rolls-Royce.
Although Bentley struggled during the 1960s and 1970s, the 1980s saw the company enjoy a rebound after Vickers, an English engineering firm became more involved. The first vehicle under their guidance was the Bentley Mulsanne, a four door luxury sedan that boasted a 6.75L V8 engine that provide plenty of power.?? The Mulsanne Turbo was introduced in 1982 and featured an engine that was 50% more powerful than the original. By 1984, the Bentley Eight was introduced, an entry-level luxury vehicle that was essentially the Mulsanne with a few refinements and sold at a lower price. Over the years, the Bentley Eight would add more features, including antilock brakes and leather seats. In 1985, the Turbo R was introduced and featured the same powerful engine as the Mulsanne Turbo.
The 1990s saw the arrival of the Continental R, a large luxury coupe that boasted a 6.75L Rolls-Royce V8 engines. In addition, the Continental R exterior was more a throwback to the traditional Bentley models of the past. The Bentley Brooklands was introduced as a replacement for the Mulsanne, and featured a 6.75L V8 that was not turbocharged. The turn of the 21st century saw BMW supply Bentley with engines while Volkswagen actually purchased the brand outright. By 2003, Volkswagen owned Rolls-Royce and the Bentley name as well. Under the Bentley name, popular luxury vehicles such as the Arnage, Azure, Continental GTC and the Flying Spur were released. Even to this day, Bentley automobiles represent the epitome of style, class, luxury and performance.
